Job description
The buyer is responsible for all aspects of the purchasing process (supplier selection, invitations to tender, negotiation, contracts, etc.), working with internal customers and suppliers. The buyer manages expenditure while meeting quality and lead time imperatives.
Main duties
Prospecting and market/category analysis
- Monitors purchased products/services with a focus on cost and quality optimisation
- Sources new suppliers
- Assesses the ability of suppliers to provide products or services that meet stated requirements
- Carries out benchmarking for purchasing categories
Helps determine internal requirements
- Gathers and defines internal customer requirements
- Helps develop specifications for target products or services
Contract negotiation and monitoring
- Writes tender documents and launches tender procedures
- Reviews and ranks bids against agreed criteria
- Negotiates financial terms
- Recommends a preferred supplier in conjunction with the internal customer
- Monitors contract negotiations
- Ensures the smooth implementation of contracts
Supplier management
- Coordinates a network of suppliers
- Maps operational and CSR risks
- Monitors economic dependency ratios
